PRESENTATIONThis intermediate level presentation will discuss the inner psychic drama experienced by those with anorexia: incessant thought, the inner torment, and the ongoing internal battle for agency and independence from the family. The theme of corruption in the family, which involves a view of the world as dangerous and the parents’ need to keep the child close and attached, is examined. Treatment implications, which require a thoughtful and collaborative approach and involve a recognition of the anorexic’s poor level of mentalization, along with a respect for the anorexic’s intense need for agency that had been thwarted developmentally, are considered. Clinical material, including the presenter’s own personal experience, will be discussed.
