THE PRESENTATION:

Clinical supervisors want to ensure that their mentoring is effective and helpful. Until recently, there has been a widespread assumption that any well-trained therapist or analyst is a potentially good supervisor. But both empirical and experiential data suggest that supervisors differ in their effectiveness, that supervisory effectiveness can be increased, and that supervisees keep more secrets from supervisors than supervisors suspect. This seminar will help supervisors become more skilled at fostering developmental processes in supervision and increasing supervisee confidence in frankly presenting clinical work and personal reactions.

THE PRESENTER:

Nancy McWilliams is a distinguished affiliate faculty member at Rutgers University’s Graduate School of Applied & Professional Psychology. She has a private practice in Lambertville, NJ, and is author of Psychoanalytic Diagnosis (1994; rev. ed. 2011), Psychoanalytic Case Formulation (1999), Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy (2004), and Psychoanalytic Supervision (2021), all with Guilford Press. She has edited, coauthored, or contributed to several other books, and is Associate Editor of the Psychodynamic Diagnostic Manual (2006; 2nd ed. 2017). A former president of APA’s Division 39 (Psychoanalysis), she is on the editorial board of Psychoanalytic Psychology.

A graduate of the National Psychological Association for Psychoanalysis, Dr. McWilliams is also affiliated with the Center for Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis of New Jersey and is on the Board of Trustees of the Austen Riggs Center. She is an honorary member of the American Psychoanalytic Association, the Moscow Psychoanalytic Society, the Institute for Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy of Turin, Italy, and the Warsaw Scientific Association for Psychodynamic Psychotherapy. She has appeared in three APA videos of master therapists and was a plenary speaker for the 2015 APA convention. Her writings have been translated into 20 languages, and she has taught in 30 countries.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES: After this seminar, participants will be able to:

1. Describe two styles of supervision that may be damaging to the growth and integrated self-confidence of the supervisee;
2. Articulate three ways that supervisors can increase the sense of safety in their mentees, leading to more frank and less defensive descriptions of clinical process.

 This program, when attended in its entirety, is offered for 1.5 CE credits.

*In order to receive CE credits for this conference, participants must attend the event in full. To receive CE credits, you must arrive no later than 10 minutes of the start time and must stay until the end of the event when a moderator will take a final tally of complete attendance.

CONFIDENTIALITY

*Ensuring the confidentiality of all clinical material presented at our meetings is of the utmost importance to SEFAPP.  Attendance is contingent on an agreement to adhere to the following guidelines: Clinical material must not be discussed outside of the session in which it is presented and furthermore must not be recorded, conveyed, or disseminated in written or electronic form.  Participants must agree to maintain a secure environment to be utilized solely by the registered participant and protected from intrusion by, or exposure to, unauthorized persons.  Presenters of case material must have either obtained informed consent from the patient (or guardian) or taken other carefully considered measures to safeguard confidentiality.  If at any time a participant suspects he or she may recognize the identity of a patient in a case presentation, the participant must leave the session immediately.  Failure to observe these guidelines constitutes a breach of APA’s ethical principles and may be cause for disciplinary and/or legal action.
